What Is The Difference Between Analog And Smart Signal Boosters?

A diagram explaining a cell booster.

A cell phone booster is essential if you live in an area where cell reception is terrible. Poor cell reception will lead to call drops, undelivered texts, slow data speed, etc. In today’s modern technological world, a proper internet connection is essential for our daily lives. Without an adequate internet connection, you cannot send emails, browse the internet, use social media, etc.

Installing a signal booster in your house helps to improve the cell signal reception. The signal booster increases the strength of the cell signal to a usable level. It uses three main components; an outside antenna, an amplifier, and an inside antenna.

The outside antenna is used to capture the existing external cell signal. There are two types of outdoor antennas; omnidirectional antenna and uni-directional antenna. The omnidirectional antenna captures signals from all directions, while the uni-directional antenna could only capture cell signal from one direction. The amplifier will increase the strength of the cell signal many folds. The inside antenna aims to rebroadcast the boosted cell signal to all the devices in the room.

Signal boosters are mainly of two types; analog and smart. Let’s look at the differences between the two.

Analog Signal Booster

Analog boosters are the most common type of cell phone boosters available in the market today. An analog signal booster’s main feature is that it can amplify all kinds of cell phone signals with traditional technology. Therefore, you can increase the cell signals of all major cell phone service providers across the country.

Analog signal boosters are also known as bi-directional amplifiers or BDAs, cellular amplifiers, cellular repeaters, etc. It can be easily installed in your home, basement, office, or even in your car. Bi-directional amplifiers can also be used for two-way radios.

Smart Signal Booster

Many experts believe that smart signal boosters are the future. It is an advanced form of wireless cell phone booster. Smart signal boosters use all-digital powerful baseband processors. The most important advantage of a smart signal booster is that it cleans the cell signals before rebroadcasting, and you will get a cell signal that is completely free of noise and distortion.

Smart signal boosters are more potent than analog signal boosters. The maximum gain of analog signal boosters is 70 dB, while the smart signal boosters can have a gain of 100 dB. A critical feature of a smart signal booster is that it does not need an outside antenna. However, smart signal boosters are expensive than analog signal boosters.
